Friday night lights in Olney, Maryland proved to be too much for the Gonzaga Purple Eagles as they fell 37 – 7 to the Falcons. Good Counsel improves to 8 – 1 and only has the one blemish from league-leading DeMatha. The Falcons will close their regular season next week against an underachieving Archbishop Carroll team while Gonzaga (5 – 4) will take on Saint John’s for the final play-off spot in their historical contest.

The Cadets (5 – 4) certainly weren’t looking ahead to the oldest rivalry in high school football in the country against Gonzaga next week because Saint John’s destroyed Bishop O’Connell 30 – 7 at home on Halloween. I really feel bad for Trimble’s Knights because the Swine Flu pretty much destroyed any hope they had for competing for a WCAC title. Bishop O’Connell (4 – 5) still has a chance to end their season respectably if they can defend their home turf against a Paul VI team that has been nothing short of horrendous this year.

Paul VI traveled out to Forestville to collect a 34 – 7 thrashing from the Bishop McNamara Mustangs. The Panthers fall to an overall record of 1 – 8 and haven’t shown any real signs of life this season with their only win coming against Saint Mary’s Ryken. The Mustangs are sporting an overall record of 8 – 1 but they have yet to play the Stags this year. No matter the outcome of the final regular season game next week McNamara can look forward to making the playoffs for the fifth year in a row.

DeMatha (9 – 0) demonized the Archbishop Carroll Lions 44 – 0 on the road this Halloween. I’m still not willing to say that the team and the defense are totally ready for the playoffs yet because the Lions (2 – 7) have played tremendously terrible this year. McNamara and Landon also shut-out Carroll earlier this year. The Stags probably still have more work to do before they are totally ready to defend their streak of six WCAC titles. I’ll give my take on what they need to make it to the next level, by the by.

Dandini’s Week 10 Power Rankings

I’m rooting for DeMatha to be the undisputed WCAC champion and in order to do that they are going to have to play up to their potential against Bishop McNamara next week.  I know that the Stags can do it, but I also know that DeMatha football has another gear that they haven’t used yet.  Let’s make it happen and keep practicing hard, DeMatha!

Cross Country Cory

Also shout outs to Cory Puffett who became to the first cross country runner in WCAC history, ever, to win the individual championship three times in a row.  In case you are trying to keep track at home, that is Puffett’s fifth cross country race win of the year, as well.  As if that wasn’t enough of a superlative, the young man also broke a course record and finished in 16 minutes, flat.  What a phenomenal runner!
